Room Planning Guide

Plan a Kitchen That Works Before Choosing Finishes

Homeowner ResourceClear, practical guidance

A successful kitchen is designed around movement, storage and daily habits. Finishes matter, but they should support a layout that works for the people who use the room.

Observe how you use the kitchen

For one week, note where groceries enter, where small appliances live, where dishes are unloaded and where people gather. Real habits reveal storage and circulation needs better than a generic wish list.

Confirm appliance specifications early

Appliance dimensions affect cabinets, clearances, electrical, gas, plumbing and ventilation. Select or at least specify major appliances before final cabinet drawings are approved.

Design storage by category

Plan locations for cookware, food, dishes, cleaning supplies, recycling and small appliances. Deep drawers, tray dividers and pantry pullouts are valuable only when assigned to real items.

Protect circulation

Consider open appliance doors, island seating, walking paths and adjacent doors. A plan can look spacious on paper while becoming tight when the refrigerator and dishwasher are open.

Layer the lighting

Combine ambient lighting, task lighting and accent lighting. Confirm switch locations and color temperature. Under-cabinet lighting should be coordinated with cabinet construction, outlets and backsplash details.

Resolve ventilation

A range hood must match the cooking equipment, duct route and make-up-air requirements where applicable. Decorative appearance should not be the only selection criterion.

Create a selection schedule

Finalize cabinets, appliances, plumbing fixtures, counters, tile, flooring, lighting and hardware in an order that supports measurements and lead times.

ADELIE perspective

A kitchen should make ordinary days easier. We recommend testing the layout against a typical morning, grocery unloading and a larger gathering before approving it.
