Selection Planning Guide

A Homeowner’s Guide to Making Material Selections on Time

Homeowner ResourceClear, practical guidance

Material decisions affect more than appearance. Product dimensions, installation instructions and delivery dates can determine plumbing locations, cabinet layouts, electrical rough-in and the project schedule.

Select by construction dependency

Prioritize appliances, plumbing fixtures, cabinets, windows, doors, tile formats and lighting that affect framing or rough utilities. Decorative accessories can usually be decided later.

Confirm lead times before ordering

Ask whether the quoted lead time begins at payment, approved drawings or final finish confirmation. Add time for freight, inspection and possible replacement of damaged items.

Build a selection schedule

List each item, responsible person, target approval date, order date, expected delivery and storage location. Update the list during project meetings.

Review maintenance honestly

Consider sealing, cleaning products, scratch resistance, heat, water exposure and repairability. A material that looks ideal in a showroom may not fit the household’s routine.

Keep samples together

View cabinet, countertop, tile, paint, flooring and hardware samples in the same lighting. Label approved samples and keep them available for installation questions.

Verify quantities and transitions

Confirm waste factors, pattern layout, grout color, edge details, thresholds, trim pieces and transitions between materials. These details often affect the finished appearance.

Inspect deliveries

Check model numbers, colors, quantities and visible damage promptly. Do not wait until the installer arrives to discover the wrong product was delivered.

ADELIE perspective

A selection is complete only when the exact product, finish, size, installation detail and delivery expectation are documented. Clear selections keep decisions from moving into the field at the last minute.
